Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: The Radiation Therapist performs radiation therapy procedures on both ambulatory and hospital patients under the general supervision of a Radiation Oncologist. Procedures are conducted as requested by a physician or other licensed provider for the diagnosis of disease and injury, in accordance with established protocols.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE:

• Performs high-quality radiation therapy procedures following exam protocols and in a timely manner.
• Maintains production and quality by adhering to established standards and procedures.
• Utilizes AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) for patient communication to identify service requirements, ensure correct exam on correct patient, and build rapport.
• Instructs patients and their families about procedures and assesses patient tolerance.
• Prepares patient and area for procedures, including positioning, adjusting immobilization, equipment, and exposure factors.
• Ensures patient and employee safety by adhering to safety, infection control, drug, and radiation policies/protocols.
• Uses proper sterile techniques for invasive procedures and maintains hand hygiene.
• Maintains equipment and work area cleanliness and quality standards.
• Collaborates with engineers and physicists for optimal equipment operation and reports issues.
• Assists in maintaining supplies inventory.
• Screens individuals entering the department according to approved policies and procedures for safety.
• Obtains, verifies, and maintains all relevant documentation (requisition/chart, patient history, pregnancy status, shielding precautions, consent forms, etc.).
• Maintains medical imaging records in appropriate systems as per department policies for timely interpretation.

• Proficiency in providing timely, accurate, and cost-efficient services in compliance with standards and policies.

• Maintains a calm, helpful, and professional attitude, even under stress, and resolves issues appropriately.
• Competence in administering first aid and using emergency equipment.
• Ensures customer satisfaction by minimizing wait times, providing courteous service, reviewing satisfaction scores, and developing action plans.
• Demonstrates current knowledge, continued education, and skills appropriate for care of all age groups (newborn, pediatric, young adult, adult, geriatric).
• Ability to serve as a preceptor, providing quality training to new team members and on new initiatives.
• Availability for on-call duties, if required.
