Job Description

Edgar Law Group, LLP — a leading tax law firm based in San Jose — is seeking a highly motivated and analytically minded Tax & Estate Planning Attorney to join our growing team. As we expand our tax resolution, estate planning, and wealth preservation services, this role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a firm known for delivering integrated, high-impact legal and financial solutions across tax, estate, real estate, bankruptcy, and complex business law. In this role, you’ll work with a diverse client base—including high-net-worth individuals, closely held businesses, and nonprofit organizations—on matters ranging from tax controversy and litigation to multi-generational estate planning and asset protection. Your work will span from negotiating with the IRS and California taxing authorities to crafting forward-looking estate and tax strategies that reduce exposure, preserve wealth, and align with client goals. Experience advising high-net-worth individuals and families on estate planning vehicles—such as revocable trusts, irrevocable trusts, charitable planning, and family limited partnerships—is highly preferred and will distinguish top candidates.. Key Focus Areas:

  • IRS and state collections, audit, and appeals representation, including direct negotiation with revenue officers, appeals agents, and agency counsel
  • Legal drafting for Tax Court petitions, estate plans, trust instruments, settlement proposals, and advisory memoranda
  • Research and resolution of complex tax and estate issues involving foreign disclosures, pass-throughs, trusts, probate, and business succession
  • Strategic estate and tax planning in coordination with real estate, probate, and corporate counsel
You’ll work closely with the Managing Partner, an Associate Attorney, a CPA, and legal professionals in a multidisciplinary environment that values client advocacy, precise execution, and proactive problem-solving. We are a collaborative, boutique firm where legal sophistication meets personalized attention. You’ll be empowered to take ownership of client matters while contributing to a cohesive team driven by integrity, accountability, and results. This position is ideal for a licensed California attorney with 3–5 years of experience in tax and estate planning, tax controversy, or compliance, especially someone who thrives in both courtroom and conference room settings. If you're looking to elevate your legal career within a dynamic and respected tax law practice, we look forward to hearing from you. Responsibilities:
  • Advise high-net-worth individuals, business owners, and fiduciaries on complex estate planning strategies, including revocable and irrevocable trusts, charitable vehicles, family limited partnerships, and succession planning.
  • Represent clients in tax controversy and collections matters before the IRS, California Franchise Tax Board (FTB), Employment Development Department (EDD), and CDTFA, including audits, appeals, installment agreements, Offers in Compromise, and Tax Court proceedings.
  • Draft and review a wide range of legal documents, including trusts, wills, durable powers of attorney, advance health care directives, Tax Court petitions, settlement proposals, and legal memoranda.
  • Perform legal research and deliver strategic analysis on federal and state tax law, trust law, probate code, and complex planning structures, providing actionable guidance tailored to client goals.
  • Collaborate with CPAs, paralegals, and other legal professionals on cross-disciplinary engagements involving business transactions, bankruptcy, probate, and real estate law.
  • Communicate proactively with clients to explain legal concepts, set expectations, and ensure the delivery of practical, high-quality legal advice.
  • Monitor changes in tax law and estate planning regulations, advising internal teams and clients on implications and opportunities for risk mitigation or planning optimization.
  • Support the firm’s broader mission by contributing to client development, continuing education, and firm growth initiatives.
Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school; admission to the California Bar in good standing is required
  • 3–5 years of legal experience in tax law, estate planning, or closely related practice areas.
  • Demonstrated experience representing clients in IRS and California tax authority matters, including audits, appeals, collections, and settlement negotiations.
  • Proficiency in drafting revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, powers of attorney, and estate planning instruments.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and California tax codes, estate and gift tax planning, and probate law.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to craft strategic, solution-oriented advice for sophisticated clients.
  • Comfort managing client relationships, including high-net-worth individuals, fiduciaries, and business owners.
  • Ability to work independently while thriving in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Experience with tax controversy litigation, Tax Court procedure, and related filings is a plus.
  • Familiarity with wealth transfer strategies, charitable planning, and business succession planning is highly desirable.
About Company: At Edgar Law Group, we delve deep into the complexities of tax law to safeguard the interests of individuals and businesses nationwide.
